1988 Spectacular Silk Sari with Moon Shloka Inscriptions

$950.00 USD

Recently-made Silk sari from Maharashtra with zari-inscribed shlokas about the moon woven in.

Inspired by the Chandrakala saris made in the olden days.

In Maharashtra, there was a ritual of praying to the Moon asking for abundant "Vastra" or Clothing. This was known चंद्राला सुताने ओवाळणे or दशा वहाणे.

At the beginning of the Lunar Month, women offered a thread of the Vastra they were wearing, to the Moon chanting  “ Let our Vastras (clothing) grow the way you grow"

There are two shlokas about this tradition..

1) चंद्र त्वां वसना च्चलस्य दशया संभावयामः कथम् ।
And
2) शंभूः श्वेतार्क पुष्पेण, चंद्रमा वस्त्रतंतुना ॥
अच्युतः स्मृतिमात्रेण, साधवः करसंपुटैः ॥

The first shloka has been inscribed as the butti or the field motif  (the round ones)  and the second Shloka is inscribed repeatedly on the Pallu end.

This rich tradition of weaving calligraphy is seen in many parts of India and is referred to as Namawali.

Note the two toned blues in the base silk. Note that there is golden and silver colored Zari. Note the red selvedge that adds character.

Great for framing and for wall display.

About 5m long.

Recent production - never used.
