1362 SOLD Old Jain Ceremonial Textile Artwork with Sun Motif

Sold to a discerning Antique Art-Lover

***

An old Jain Ceremonial Textile with auspicious sun motif..

The sun is one of the 14 important auspicious symbols that feature in the dream of the mother of a baby who is designated to be the Jina. [See last picture from the British Museum].

Hand spun handwoven coarse cotton base cloth. Undyed.

Hand done art probably using the rogan technique.

The field has beautiful inner & outer borders and florets all over the field. The centre of the florets originally may have had some silver 'tiklis' most of which have been removed.

Note also the silver warak diagnol lattice lines that run across the field (now faded and visible at certain angles)

May have been used as a canopy or a wall hanging.

Made by the family for self-use as was the case for most art objects in the olden days in Gujarat.

The Jain community is both wealthy and traditional. Therefore the need to sell family artworks does not arise and so Jain textiles are uncommon.

Age unknown but estimated to be 50-60 years old

Has a few minor signs of wear. generally good condition.
